To strengthen our international team CAMECO seeks to recruit a Media expert for decolonization and dealing with a violent past - in collaboration with AGIAMONDO

The Great Lakes region has been suffering from conflict for decades. Despite efforts by a various actors, reconciliation and stability remain a challenge. Unresolved causes of conflict and tensions continue to burden the people of Burundi and Rwanda, while violence is once again intensifying in eastern DR Congo.

In this difficult media environment, CAMECO has been making an important international contribution to shaping a positive media landscape from its base in Aachen for over 50 years. The institution supports church partners worldwide in developing sustainable media projects, be it through radio networks, digital solutions or the professionalization of editorial offices. The focus is on effective concepts that implement social and pastoral goals.

You will work at CAMECO in Aachen and use your perspectives and expertise to contribute to research on the topics of dealing with a violent past and reconciliation in the region and to promote international cooperation and networking. As a media expert with a professional or personal connection to the region, you will have knowledge of the history and conflict dynamics of the African continent and apply this to support CAMECO in developing resources and methods for communication in (post-)conflict situations related to colonial pasts and continuities.

Your Tasks:

  • You will design the development of a digital archive that bundles research literature and learning materials on “Dealing with the Past” (DwP) as well as on (neo)colonial heritage and the associated media
  • You will analyze and identify relevant stakeholders and potential actors in order to build a network for journalism, communication and DwP. You will actively integrate civil society listening clubs and promote various discussion formats.
  • You will advise and coordinate the production of media content in Germany and the Great Lakes region.
  • You contribute to the development of a handbook on journalism, communication and DwP and use it for trainings and workshops with journalists in the region.
  • You will do business trips to visit the Great Lakes region and different places in Europe for further relevant research and networking. 

Your Profile:

  • You have professional experience in and a personal connection to the African Great Lakes region (Rwanda, Burundi or the Democratic Republic of Congo) and therefore bring indispensable perspectives and experience to the project. 
  • You have a university degree in communication and media studies, peace and conflict studies, African history, political science, development studies or a related field of study.
  • You have experience with research methods and epistemological approaches to decoloniality.
  • You have practical experience in the production of (digital) content for media.
  • You have in-depth knowledge of African history, especially the Great Lakes region.
  • You have expertise in the areas of peacebuilding and dealing with a violent past. 
  • You are fluent in French and English, knowledge of German is an advantage, as is knowledge of other languages spoken in the region such as Kinyarwanda, Lingala, Kirundi and Kiswahili.
